About
I have always loved plants and gardens. My childhood interest was encouraged by my mother as I helped her transform a derelict farmyard into a beautiful cottage garden.
That was in a small village north of Cambridge, where I grew up. Although still based here, I have family and friends in many parts of the world and have travelled extensively, especially in Southern India. My inspiration comes from many different cultures and landscapes.
I gained a BA (Hons) in Art & Design from Bretton Hall University College, specialising in ceramic sculpture, then ran a ceramics studio for 14 years. My love of plants, design, and the natural environment then led me to a training in garden design which I completed in 2001. A garden I designed as part of my course won the East of England Garden Design Competition.
Since then I have designed a wide range of gardens, large and small, traditional and contemporary. Although most of my gardens are for domestic clients and often small projects, I have also created designs for other projects including:
- Show Gardens
- Gardens registered with the Quiet Garden Movement
- Meditative Gardens
- Gardens for clients with various accessibility requirements including a Sensory garden for a Children’s Hospice
Although I have designed gardens across the UK and abroad, I now prefer to focus on gardens more locally. This means I can recommend and work with local landscaping teams with whom I have good, long-term working relationships, and source plants from nurseries that can often supply a wide range of reasonably priced and good quality plants that may not be available from garden centres.
Sustainability, awareness of climate change, and care for the environment are central to my practice. This means careful consideration of materials, water conservation and plant selection, as well as creating areas which support wildlife. I have been involved in a number of ecological and wildlife initiatives such as setting up wildflower meadow areas in the churchyard of my local church, as well as installing bird, bat and hedgehog boxes and wildlife ponds.
